The Holt Report: Volleyball growing in Stillwater under another Webber

STILLWATER, Okla. — When Ryan Webber was in college he often played volleyball and developed a passion for the sport.

That passion led him to start the volleyball program at Stillwater High in 1997 during his tenure as a math teacher at SHS.

He turned the Lady Pioneer program into a state power and into a program that made numerous trips to the state tournament.

In the last 10 years he was head coach the Lady Pioneers were ranked in the top 10, won three of the last five conference titles and qualified for the state tourney the last six years. His teams also excelled academically.

Webber, a 1991 SHS graduate, was named Regional Coach-of-the-Year five times, Conference Coach of the year four times and was named All-State Coach in 2001.

Webber, the son of Bruce and Jill Webber, also became involved in coaching club volleyball and organized the Stillwater Volleyball Club. He later coached for the Tulsa Volleyball Club, which is now ClubOne, and the Oklahoma Peak before joining the Oklahoma Charge 12 years ago.

Webber left SHS to become Director of Creative Services for Jameson Management in Oklahoma City. He helps with marketing for dental offices across the United States. He was lured to the job by his familiarity with his boss, his younger brother Jess.

Webber and his wife Jody remained involved in volleyball through their association with the Oklahoma Charge Volleyball Club, which started in 2001.

Webber is the Director of Coaching for the club and has been for the past 10 years. Jody, who ran the Stillwater Volleyball Club for nine years, is the Director of Program Development for the Charge.

Both were on the scene this past weekend as the Oklahoma Regional Volleyball Association Tournament was held at the Cox Convention Center in downtown Tulsa.

“I work 12 months a year on volleyball and deal a lot with parent communication,” Webber said. “Every year I’m usually looking for around 30 coaches for all of our teams. I also deal with practice schedules, tournament schedules and working with new coaches.

“I spend around two nights a week in the gym. I still give lessons so in a way I still do a lot of coaching, either coaching younger players or younger coaches,” he added.

One of the coaches he hired is current SHS volleyball coach Jason Webber, who coaches an Oklahoma Charge 16s team. Several SHS volleyball players are involved in club volleyball through different programs around the state.

“Jody does a lot of work with our youth programs in helping grow the sport of volleyball. She’s on the board of the Oklahoma Volleyball Association and does a lot of work with the regional tournaments,” Webber said

“That’s our passion and the passion of the Charge program is to see the sport of volleyball continue growing.”
