STILLWATER, Okla. — Monty Harper is a children's musician who performs regularly for the Stillwater Library and many schools. He hopes to interest kids in science, reading and other topics through song.

The Stillwater resident graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1992 with a Master's degree in mathematics. While going to school, he took an interest in writing. He took a writing class and after "messing around with some recording equipment," he said, Harper had his first song written and recorded. After playing it for neighbors and their children, Harper thought a career in children's songwriting might be for him.

Harper is waiting to record his latest CD titled "Songs from the Science Frontier.. A majority of songs for this album were inspired by Stillwater scientists and their research. Harper is looking to compile these songs into the album and get them recorded. However, the project is not cheap so he is raising funds.

"To record a CD, it takes a lot of money," said Harper. "In the past, I've done CDs myself at home in my home studio and I feel I've reached the peak level of what I can accomplish that way, on my own. These science songs, I'm so inspired by them ... I want this CD to have a professionalism to it that's going to give it legs so when I send it out to get it reviewed, it will be highly praised and highly sought after ... "

Harper will host a fundraising vigil online at his website Aug.t 21 at 7 p.m. For more information visit www.montyharper.com.
