Firefighters put out trash fire

A driver for a commercial trash collector discovered the load on his truck was on fire, Tuesday, and pulled into a vacant lot in the 1700 Block of East 6th Avenue. There he dumped the burning load on the ground and called the fire department. Firefighters from Station 1 answered the call and knocked the fire down, but, because it was compacted, could not extinguish it completely. A back hoe was brought to the scene, which spread out the trash and the fire was extinguished. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately two hours.
