Water Garden Society plans tour

Stillwater Water Garden Society’s 2006 water garden tour, scheduled for July 24-25, will feature gardens in Perkins and Stillwater.

Stillwater Water Garden Society’s 2006 water garden tour will feature gardens in Stillwater and Perkins.

The tour will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and June 25 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

It will feature 15 gardens, some with water features, others with natural ponds, but most with homemade water gardens, designed by home owners and dug by hand. Also on the tour is a working fish farm.

“The hosts this year are so excited about being on the tour,” said Sharral Tye, SWGS president.

Tour booklets are $5 and allow entry for a carload to each garden on the tour. Booklets are on sale at O’Higgin’s, Oasis, Aqua Mart, Keathly’s and Stillwater National Bank in Stillwater; at D’Mario’s Pizza and Perkins Veterinary Clinic in Perkins; and at Wood N’Stuff in Perry.

“The addition of water to a garden adds a beautiful and distinct element that is pleasing to all who enter,” Tye wrote in a press release. “Water gardening is less about garden style, but more about fulfilling a need. We drag nature to our doorsteps by placing a water garden just within sight of our breakfast table or home office window or other apertures that cry for a spectacular view.”

There will be an opportunity for the public to vote for their favorite water garden in three categories: small, medium and large water gardens. Those ballots will be found inside the front cover of each booklet purchased.

The booklets also include clear directions from one pond to the next, a description of each and advertisements from businesses that are water garden supporters.
