A hearing on former City Councilor Darrell Dougherty's lawsuit against the mayor's campaign manager Jim Trent was set for a scheduling hearing Nov. 17.
On Thursday, Dougherty's attorney Willie Baker asked Special District Judge Stephen Kistler to set the case for scheduling order. Deadlines for sharing information and a trial date are typically agreed upon at scheduling order hearings.
Dougherty is challenging the validity of a pre-petition to boot him from office and accusing Trent of libel/slander, court documents show. Trent circulated a pre-petition to remove Dougherty from office, but it failed. Dougherty lost a reelection bid this year. Trent was Mayor Nathan Bates' campaign manager. Dougherty petitioned for a recall election for Bates and Bates survived the election by four votes.
