Stillwater’s local Head Start program has 17 three- and four-year-old children enrolled this summer. During the regular fall schedule, more than 100 children are enrolled, with approximately 20 staff members.
For summer, staff members rotate in the classroom, giving everyone an opportunity to attend staff training sessions, organize individual classrooms for fall and complete intake interviews with prospective families.
As Head Start encourages parent volunteers, there are usually one or two parents spending quality time in the classroom each day. Also, this summer, the program has an intern with the dedication and willingness to work long hours and perform all tasks necessary to ensure a high-quality program.
Activities for summer may include painting, water play, nature walks, field trips, math and science activities, reading and book experiences, picnics and food experiences, sand and sensory activities and music and movement variations.
Although these activities are similar to those in the fall schedule, there is more flexibility and allowance for warm-weather activities in summer.
Staff members also receive many opportunities for personal growth and development during the summer months: Head Start employees participate in instructional workshops, all-day seminars, hands-on activities and audience-responsive sessions over a number of different appropriate subjects., including “Building Relationships,” “Plan-Do-Review,” “Health and Nutrition,” “Disabilities and Challenging Behaviors” and “Program Design and Management.”
UCAP Head Start Preschool Program’s summer session will continue throughout the month of June 2006. Head Start provides quality education, nutritious meals and snacks and health and developmental assessments for income-eligible three- and four-year-old children. In addition, Head Start assists families in networking with community resources.
