Work continues on area roadway construction projects and paving is scheduled for the upcoming week.

Barring rain, paving is scheduled to begin on Lakeview Road and 19th Avenue by midweek.

Ryan McKaskle, city engineer, said officials with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation indicated paving of Lakeview could begin as soon as Wednesday. The base layer of asphalt will be followed by the construction of a curb and gutter.

The next step for the reconstruction of Lakeview will be to switch traffic to the south and remove the temporary detour.

According to Theron Smith, public works deputy director, initial paving of 19th Avenue is also scheduled to begin early next week. Charlie Kercie, projects superintendent for Cummins Construction, indicated crews will work through the weekend and paving could begin as early as Tuesday.

Paving will be followed by construction of a curb and gutter as well.

“It all depends on what the weather does,” Kercie said.

According to Kercie, rain could set paving back two weeks.

Barring delays, city officials are projecting April 12 as the completion date for phase one of the 19th Avenue reconstruction.

Following the completion of phase one, construction will switch to the east half of 19th Avenue.

The final surface layer is projected for July 2, and signing and striping is scheduled July 12.

Smith indicated the only significant delays on the 19th Avenue project were due to ice storms at the beginning of the year. Utility conflicts have caused a few, small delays.

McKaskle said reconstruction of the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Jardot has recently seen delays due to the discovery of an unmarked private sewer line. Excluding weather delays, the project is no more than a week behind at this point.

The retaining wall being constructed at Fairlawn Cemetery along Sixth Avenue is also progressing and completion is scheduled for April 25.

Smith said the cast-in-place retaining walls have provided a more uniform product than modular block walls.

Smith also said city officials have had three pre-design conferences in the last two weeks for future reconstruction projects.

The conferences covered work on: Jardot, from 12th to McElroy; 12th Avenue, from Western to Duck; 19th Avenue, from Main to Jardot; Jardot, from 19th to 12th; and the reconstruction of the Boomer Creek bridge on 19th Avenue.
