For 11 years, the Stillwater Area United Way has kicked off their annual fund raising campaign with the Day of Caring, on the third Thursday of September.

This year’s event is set for Sept. 20 with the 12th annual Day of Caring, according to Mike Stuart, United Way president. About 400 volunteers will gather in the Sirloin Stockade for breakfast before heading out to work sites across the Stillwater and Perkins communities. Volunteers will scrape, paint, rake, mow and clean at their project site. Gene Wollenberg, Payne County Bank, chairs the overall Day of Caring event.

Volunteers representing about 30 companies from the area and will work on approximately 75 projects. They will be sporting tee shirts with the new Day of Caring logo. Stillwater Medical Center is the major corporate sponsor for the event and the shirt sponsors are BancFirst, Mercury MerCruiser, Stillwater Designs/KICKER, OSU Foundation and Stillwater National Bank. A new shirt sponsor this year is the Stillwater Fraternal Order of Police. The Day of Caring is also a certified Oklahoma Centennial event.

Lunch will be provided for volunteers at the Payne County Expo Center at noon hosted by Payne County employees. Again this year, the district attorney’s office staff will be cooking hamburgers.

The public is invited to attend the hamburger lunch for $5 which includes a hamburger, chips, a drink and Girl Scout cookies for dessert.

Stillwater Radio will broadcast live from the Expo Center during the lunch. Volunteers will be most willing to share stories of their work adventures from that morning.

Area businesses are donating items for the breakfast and lunch.

Assisting Wollenberg with planning the Day of Caring are Kyle Gibbs, Ryan Smith, Teri Smith, Cindy Blankenship, Denise Weaver, Fred Forbes, LeAnn Szijarto, Gina Killough and Kimberly Sinclair.

The campaign theme is “The WAY Caring Counts”. Sarah Little, editor Stillwater Magazine and Sarah Price, assistant editor, designed this year’s flier with bright primary colors incorporating numbers for graphics. Quebecor World has again donated the printing of the 40,000 brochures.

Earlier this spring, the Stan Clark Companies hosted the annual Three Amigos United Way Golf Classic which raised over $20,000 for the fall campaign, too.

Their Juke Joint Jog, which benefits the Stillwater Area United Way, is set for Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. Stillwater Medical Center will host a “Kid’s Fun Zone” in conjunction with the Juke Joint Jog. The MerCruiser boat donation added several thousand dollars to the campaign coffer, too.
