The Oklahoma State University Student Union has been recognized as the nation’s top collegiate student union by BestCollegeReviews.org.
The website counted down the top 25 locations in the United States based on accommodations, programs, look and more.
Student Union Director and Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Mitch Kilcrease said they were honored and thrilled to be at the top of the list.
“It’s an icon that’s provided a multitude of programs and services for the OSU community for many, many years,” he said.
Kilcrease said the student union has always been operated with students in mind. Recent renovations totaling $65 million gave the building a new look and enhanced space since it opened in August 1950.
“Even though the renovations enhanced the building significantly, it’s always been what the building has represented,” Kilcrease said. “What we represent is a group of people helping students succeed academically.”
Beating out other student unions located at West Virginia University, Brigham Young University and Kansas State University, the trademark locale is a comprehensive stop for students.
“Every student that ever thinks about OSU, this is the first building they come to,” Kilcrease said. “When they come to campus, this is the building they come to 3 to 5 times a week to eat, go to activities, bursar books; all those activities over the course of their college career.”
The most important, however, is that the constant cycle of visiting the student union repeats itself when those students raise their children to attend OSU.
“When people see the building, that steeple, it invokes certain emotions in them,” he said.
The article states “the Union is home to a 550-seat movie theatre, art exhibitions, student lounges, the OSU Student Store, post office, athletic ticket office, and a food court filled with diverse dining options, including the luxurious Ranchers Club restaurant. As if that was not enough, the Student Union also contains the Atherton Hotel, which provides 81 extravagant rooms for guests and serves as a living classroom experience for the Oklahoma State School of Hotel and Restaurant Administration. Therefore, it is no surprise that the grand Oklahoma State Union in Stillwater takes the crown for the most amazing and comprehensive student union.”
