Payne County Relay has another banner year in fundraising

Around 70 cancer survivors were celebrated along with the remembrance of those who lost their battle with cancer Saturday at the annual Relay for Life of Payne County.

Twenty-two teams made up of almost 225 people participated in the event at the Payne County Expo Center at Heritage Hall. Together, these participants raised more than $138,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The top earning team was the Cancer Survivor team with over $31,000. Team captain Roy Bays was also the top individual earner with almost $20,000. The top company was Stillwater Medical Center with almost $20,000 raised.

Payne County is first in the state right now with money raised for the American Cancer Society, according to ACS representative Susan Flesner.

An estimated 1.76 million people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer in 2019 and over 606,000 people will die, according to the American Cancer Society.

In Oklahoma, the American Cancer Society estimates 20,540 new cased and 8,420 deaths in 2019.
