Five staff members were treated for injuries and released after a brief assault on a correctional officer at the Cimarron Correctional Facility on Tuesday night in Cushing.
According to a release from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (DOC), the assault occurred at about 9 p.m. when a correctional officer used pepper spray on an inmate who refused to comply with orders. This led to several inmates assaulting the officer and responding officers who attempted to assist in the matter. The release reads that the assault quickly ended due to the further use of pepper spray.
No inmates were injured in the incident, but the five staff members were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and released. The DOC's Office of Inspector General is investigating the incident at Cimarron Correctional Facility, a private prison owned and operated by CoreCivic.
